Diary kept by Marcus L. Woodard on a voyage of the clipper ship Surprise (Capt. Charles A. Ranlett), from New York to Batavia, March 25 - June 13, 1861. In addition to usual weather and ship-handling entries, the author, who was mate on the voyage, records daily events and personal observations such as the morale of the crew, sensitivity about their cargo of gunpowder, especially in lightning storms, entertainment, making ice cream, storms, etc.
